FIRST-GENERATION LAPTOP INITIATIVE

E2D (Eliminate the Digital Divide) is proud to introduce the First-Generation Laptop Initiative, a new program dedicated to uplifting and empowering college-bound high school seniors across North Carolina who will be the first in their families to attend a four-year college or university.

Navigating the transition from high school to college is a significant milestone—especially for first-generation students who may face unique challenges in accessing the tools and resources needed to succeed. At E2D, they believe that every student deserves a fair and equal opportunity to thrive in higher education, regardless of their background or economic status.

As part of their broader mission to close the digital divide, this initiative will provide free, high-quality refurbished laptops to eligible students. Their goal is to help remove technology barriers that could otherwise limit access to coursework, communication, research, and career planning. With the right tools in hand, these students will be better equipped to step confidently into their college experience and beyond.

Through this initiative, we aim to not only bridge the gap in digital access—but also to celebrate and support the resilience, ambition, and potential of North Carolina’s first-generation college students.

Student Eligibility

Who is eligible to receive a laptop?

Students must meet the following criteria:

Be enrolled at South Piedmont Community College.
Be considered a first-generation college student (neither parent or legal guardian has earned a bachelor's degree).
Demonstrate a need for a personal computer for educational purposes.
Complete the college's application process.
Meet any additional eligibility requirements established by the College.

What does "first-generation college student" mean?

For this program, a first-generation college student is someone whose parent(s) or legal guardian(s) have not earned a bachelor's degree.

Do I need to demonstrate financial need?

The College may consider financial need and other factors when reviewing applications. Additional information will be requested as part of the application process, if applicable.

Can Continuing Education students apply?

Yes, this program is for all students, regardless of program.

Application Process

How do students apply?

Students must complete the First-Generation Laptop Initiative application. Information about the application process, deadlines, and required documentation will be available through Student Services.

What information will students need to provide?

Applicants may be asked to provide:

Student ID number (if applicable)
Enrollment information
Confirmation of first-generation status
A brief statement describing how receiving a laptop will support their academic success
Additional documentation if requested

Is receiving a laptop guaranteed?

No. Since only 50 laptops are available, meeting the eligibility requirements does not guarantee that a student will receive one.

How will students be selected?

Applications will be reviewed by the College using established selection criteria. Priority may be given based on demonstrated need, enrollment status, and other factors determined by the College.

When will students be notified?

Selected students will receive an email with instructions regarding laptop pickup.

Laptop Information

Are the laptops new?

No. The laptops are professionally refurbished by E2D and have been tested to ensure they are fully functional and ready for student use. Laptops have also been tested and reviewed our campus IT department for security.

What software is installed?

Laptops include a licensed operating system and basic software necessary for academic use. Students may also install software provided through the College's student technology resources.

Is technical support provided?

South Piedmont provides support for connecting to campus resources and basic technology assistance through techhelp@spcc.edu or stopping by the Tech Commons.

Can students keep the laptop?

The College will communicate whether the laptop is being provided as a permanent gift to the student or as equipment that must be returned. Students should review and sign the program agreement before accepting a laptop.

General Questions

Is there a cost to students?

No. Eligible students who are selected will receive a laptop at no cost.

Can students receive more than one laptop?

No. Students are limited to one laptop through this initiative.

Will additional laptops become available?

Possibly. Future distributions will depend on additional donations and available funding.
